The cost of legacy

Updated: Jan 17, 2024

I want to raise awareness for "legacy" hidden costs by AWS.

One of the reasons to migrate to a new (and supported) generation, for each service, is the financial aspect of such a move.

Most people know that moving to new hardware (*usually*) means paying less.

But, did you know that remaining on legacy hardware will mean in the long run paying more?

Whether it is an extra payment for EBS Optimized legacy instances

Or paying hourly for extended RDS support for end-of-life versions

AWS also announced Amazon EKS extended support for Kubernetes version pricing

Be aware of the hidden costs of running unsupported hardware in your environment.

Which "hidden" costs are you aware of?

I liked how the article The Cost of Legacy explained that sticking with old cloud hardware or unsupported systems can quietly raise your expenses over time, because moving to newer, supported technology often lowers your long‑term bills and makes everything run smoother at scale.  I remember a stretch during my own research when I was juggling numbers and deadlines and I used online Statistics class help so I could focus on analysis without extra stress. That mix of smart planning and support reminded me why clear goals and good tools matter.
